Setting up and aligning the Camera Lucida App
When you use your iPad and Camera Lucida on a stand you will get parallax issues. These are easily sorted by using either the "auto" mode or "manual" setup mode in Camera Lucida. In this video I show you how to setup your Camera Lucida App and your iPad so you do not have any alignment or parallax issues.

    Great introduction to Lucida which may well suit my needs. I am an airbrush artist and transferring an image to the substrate can be a real pain. I have used a projector but find it very awkward trying to trace on the vertical and trying to stand out of the way of the projector. How about going to A3 size?

    • @JonathanCampDesigner
      @JonathanCampDesigner 2 місяці тому

      Yes you can do A3 with various methods. Either draw in 2 halves, or use the newer ipad and webcam combination (which enables you to draw just about any size you like), plus lots of other techniques (see numerous other videos). It's a great app and I love it.

    Just the thing I need. Looking for ways to transfer my image for any size up to A3. Tried projectors but can’t get along with trying to draw on the vertical without standing in the way ready to airbrush. This could well be my best bet. Thank you.

    Some thoughts on Mentor Klapp Reflex. I believe shutter has been replaced and simplified. The clue is in the scale on back of camera and innermost parallel roller. I believe it should have two blinds. One blind is moved to vary the width of opening. My camera has T instead of Z on shutter winder. Shutter is completely missing but has remains of curtain tape on innermost brass roller. Parallel rollers are coupled. To uncouple rollers to vary width of opening advance shutter winder while lifting knurled ring around shutter knob. At some point while rotating, the knurled ring will lift and uncouple rollers. Knurled ring has stops at each end of travel. Innermost roller is rotated by knurled ring. The numbers on shutter knob equate to width of opening. Viewing through rear ground glass is done at maximum opening of shutter as per large format practice. Lens panel and lens board behind are removable. I do not believe they were used with other lenses (non aperture lenses as in brass lenses) but can be because of shutter. Possible manufacturing dates 1910 to 1930. Could be bought with rectangular leather case which held camera horizontally closed and three double darkslide sheet film holders numbered 1 to 6. Photos of case and film holders are available online. earlyphotography.co.uk has explanation and diagrams of various two blind shutters. My example came with two film holders and some negatives which suggest last used early to mid 1930's. Single roller with numbers is for shutter tensioning. Higher number equates to higher shutter speed.

    The heat sink you mentioned inside the battery pack is a thermal fuse. I couldn’t figure out what it was either until I hooked an ohmmeter up to it and heated it up. Only then did I see “70C” printed on the outside underneath the heat shrink. At 70C it quickly goes from zero resistance to being an open circuit. Maybe just a bimetallic strip inside or something that gets hot with enough charge current. 1:49

    Hi again, so, when you say to get the image close to matching, how close do you mean? I am able to get it pretty darn close, except that the top or the bottom circles aren't quite matching. I also noticed that on your sheets the writing also matches. Why is my writing upside down? My paper is not upside down. Is it because the picture that I saved is not a mirror image? Or maybe it is a mirror image?🤷🏻‍♀️ Anyway, I've almost got it, I just can't seem to get one of the circles completely lined up. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    • @JonathanCampDesigner
      @JonathanCampDesigner 6 місяців тому

      Personally I don’t get the circles and squares necessarily exactly spot-on. The writing should be correct. You can flip the image. You should be able to read the text on the screen and read the text on the printout so they are both the correct way round. Getting the circles and squares et cetera exactly on top of each other does take some practice. You can use your finger to move the image on the screen up and down and you can pinch the image to zoom it in and out so that you get the correct image on the screen Is the image on the screen and the image on the paper in front of you both reading the right way around?

      @@JonathanCampDesigner Thanks for responding. It turns out bringing my photo up in the app using the front camera, it comes up as a reverse image of the original photo. I scoured Pete’s videos and his tutorials and all I found was that there used to be a button in the upper left corner to change the photo to the right direction. The newest update on the app is supposed to automatically correct this problem that can occur when using the front camera. Well, it didn’t. I even checked my iPad, which is a 6th generation, to see if there was a way to mirror the image. There is, but it was turned off. I tried it anyway just because I was at a loss as to what to do. Of course, it didn’t work. I’m going to send an email to Pete and see what he says. If you have any other ideas, please let me know. Thanks for your time! One more thing, I tried the setup that was close to being right, and the drawing came out fine, except that it was a mirrored image. It was really screwing with my brain as I was copying a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge and it was heading the wrong direction. LOL I hope it will be easier when it’s going the right way!

    Im hoping to use this technique for charcoal sketching and using a five value system of core shadow, cast shadow, highlights, reflected light and mid tones,

      Yes this would really help with shading as there are filters which can reduce images to 'shades' (number determined by you). I have a video on the filters on the channel... 👍

    This is absolutely fantastic. I have interest in this. It's been many, many years since I've used my creativity like this. The lucida thing with the ipad is new for me. I may give it a try to bring back some muscle memory since I'm in retirement now and my hands are as steady as they used to be. I am almost hypnotized by listening intently and watching what can be done with technology. Keep producing and I'll keep watching.

    Thank you so much! This was the best explanation that I’ve seen on how to manually set this up. It was more in depth than the others I watched. I think I f]get now. I’m going to give it a go, as you folks from the UK say!

    Since the picture seems a little distorted to me, so I would say the Camera Lucida helped a lot with getting an accurate drawing down. I actually prefer the first painting. Don’t forget to look at your values; they are more important than the actual colors you use. I’m just learning to use this app and want to thank you for doing these videos. They are more helpful to me, and my older brain, to understand how to use it than Pete’s videos. You have more details. Thanks!
